Lightshape is an award-winning company based in Germany. Founded in 2007, the firm quickly became a pioneer of digital reality through 3D innovation. While they are best known for their multi-user collaboration software HCC, their everyday business is the provision of flexible and individual project solutions – be it CGI, interactive media, or software development.
Lightshape is particularly renowned for its expertise in the automotive sector. Their teams are experienced in staging vehicle designs and integrating complex technical models into real-time applications.

¶ The Imperative for Automation.
Lightshape was hired to create highly optimized versions, so-called LODs, of different vehicle models for their client's digital car showroom. This was a key project for the studio, as AR/VR apps continue to gain popularity in their core market. Yet the production of the LODs through a manual workflow called retopology was simply too time consuming and expensive: 30 hours spent per LOD was a time budget the studio could not afford. Accommodating to frequent change requests made by the client resulted in the pre-existing manual workflow becoming unfeasible for a studio of Lightshape’s size. It was apparent that the project could not be delivered manually at a competitive price point.

Achieved 60x in cost savings
With InstaLOD, VR-ready assets could be generated with a few clicks and at a quality that exceeded expectations on all counts. From an originally estimated 60 hours, the development time for the project shrunk down to a mere 6 hours. The work of a week and a half had been accomplished in less than a business day.
Lightshape’s customer satisfaction equally benefited from the project’s momentum: Assets could be adjusted on the fly, allowing for tighter feedback loops and a direct involvement of the client into the creative process.
